Quilting leads to a diaper business?

I have been quilting for many years, I love to quilt, but lately I have not found much time to quilt, and it is because thanks to a new baby in 2008 I fell into a new business!

I was working happily as a web designer, with my own business Quilting Web.  My main client was Carriage House Quilt Shoppe in Plano.  When the owner decided to retire and close the store at around the same time my baby was born, I decided to scale back my web design business and not accept any new clients and focus on the baby.  It was my fourth baby, so I know what it is like for that first couple of months after a birth of a baby, and it doesn’t get any easier with each baby.

I decided to use cloth diapers on this baby.  When I could not find a cloth insert to the gDiapers I was using, I decided to make my own.  I do sew after all.  Then I found others were looking for an insert for the same reason.  Well as a web designer, I put up a little website, came up with a name, and started to sew.  These inserts sold, and I started to get into other types of cloth diapers, so I decided to see if I could sell those brands too.

Within a year, the business had taken over my house, and I started to rent storage units.  Then I found a little office warehouse in nearby Allen Texas.  I moved my business out into that.  Then customers asked me to open up.  So we ran an experiment and found that we were popular.

So now Nappy Shoppe is a full time business for me, and as at May 2011 we have 8 employees.  I feel great about being able to contribute to the local economy, saving the earth, one cloth diaper at a time.
